How Dividend Dates Work

Understanding these four key dates is essential for dividend investors:

Declaration Date

When the company announces the dividend amount, ex-date, record date, and payment date.

Ex-Dividend Date

The cutoff date. You must own shares BEFORE this date to receive the dividend. This is the most important date for investors.

Record Date

The company checks its records to determine who receives the dividend (usually 1-2 business days after ex-date).

Payment Date

When the dividend is actually deposited into your brokerage account. Typically 2-4 weeks after the ex-date.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to buy to get the dividend?

You must own shares before the ex-dividend date. Due to T+1 settlement, buy at least one business day before the ex-date to ensure you're on record.

Can I sell on the ex-dividend date and still get paid?

Yes! Once the ex-dividend date arrives, you can sell your shares and still receive the dividend payment on the payment date.

Why does the stock price drop on ex-dividend date?

The stock price typically drops by approximately the dividend amount on the ex-date because new buyers won't receive the pending dividend.

How long after ex-date do I get paid?

Payment usually arrives 2-4 weeks after the ex-dividend date. The exact payment date is announced when the dividend is declared.

What's the best strategy for dividend capture?

Dividend capture (buying just before ex-date and selling after) rarely works due to price drops. Long-term holding of quality dividend stocks is generally more profitable.
